Victor Lemonte Wooten is a unique human being. Born the youngest of five boys, he began learning to play music at the tender age of two. He started performing in nightclubs and theaters as the bassist with the family band at age five, and at age six, was on tour with his brothers opening shows for legendary soul artist Curtis Mayfield. Soon after, he was affectionately known as the 8-year-old Bass Ace, and before graduating high school, he and his brothers had shared the stage with artists such as Stephanie Mills, War, Ramsey Lewis, Frankie Beverly and Maze, Dexter Wansel, and The Temptations. But, this only begins to tell the tale of this Tennessee titan.

Wooten, now a five-time Grammy winner, hit the worldwide scene in 1990 as a founding member of the super-group Bela Fleck and the Flecktones. Continuing to blaze a musical trail with the band, Victor has also become widely known for his own Grammy nominated solo recordings and tours.

Among other things, he is a loving husband and father of four, a skilled naturalist and teacher, a published author, a magician and acrobat, and has won every major award given to a bass guitarist including being voted Bassist of the Year in Bass Player Magazine’s readers poll three times (the only person to win it more than once.) In 2011, Rolling Stone Magazine voted Victor one of the Top Ten Bassist of ALL TIME.

For as far back as she can remember, Autumn Ashley has had the desire to sing. Born and raised in the Midwest, her love of music creation was cultivated by her parents and peers. From listening to classic rock with her father in the car, to writing songs with her mother before bedtime, her musical style has always been informed by her surroundings.

Autumn Ashley began her music career touring with Acquire The Fire as a worship band member and leader for two years. During this time she performed for over 200,000 people and shared the stage with musicians like Delirious, TobyMac, Jeremy Camp, Newsboys, Skillet and Superchick.

Her music has often been described as a heart’s cry with rhythms and lyrics that evoke a very deep, raw, organic emotion. “I have been given this gift, but it is not about me. My music is an offering for people to relate to, learn from, be blessed by and think about,” says Autumn.

Her first solo album So Long, Hello was born out of recent life experiences. After struggling with her fiancé’s hospitalization and illness, as well as transitioning from life on the road to a quieter existence, she wrote the album as a way to process these changes.

“She is real,” says Bryan Boecker, drummer and former Acquire The Fire band member. “Some of her most beautiful music is born from adversity.”

Autumn Ashley currently resides in Connecticut with her husband and continues to pursue her craft by writing new material, performing at local venues and helping lead worship at her church. “I have reached a season where I am at peace with who I am and where I am going with my music,” she says. “I love to share my heart through my creations and pass along the expression of my journey to others.”

A celebration of the musical, social and spiritual history of Reggae music—and a benefit concert for C2G Music Hall.

Reggae music is many things—a spiritual focus, a voice for social change and an immersive sound that draws the listener into a different world. Reggae and its related genres such as rocksteady, ska, and dancehall have profoundly influenced all types of popular music. Irie Reggae pulls together musicians with deep roots in the reggae scene in order to honor the music’s history and culture. Join us and be transported to a night in Jamaica–and at the same time help support C2G Music Hall, Fort Wayne’s premier non-profit venue for music.

A Yehuda XCIX

Featuring
Gregorio “Mandingo” Guadalupe, with Michael Patterson,
Aurora Rivera, Jim Steele, Akinlana Dada, Kent “Kiwi” Fingerle,
& Jon Walker

Gregorio “Mandingo” Guadalupe

Born in Hungry Hills, St Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands, and of Puerto Rican decent, Mandingo began playing drums as a child. A master of many styles of music and numerous percussion instruments, including congas, nyabinghi drums, berimbau, timbales and the trap set (just to name a few), Mandingo has earned the reputation as a go-to-guy when it comes to rhythm—especially with music from around the world, such as reggae. A former and long-time member of the acclaimed Chicago-based Roots Rock Society reggae band, Mandingo has played with some of the genre’s legendary groups and performers including John Holt, Earle China Smith, Victor Clotty

Michael Patterson,

As a familiar part of the local music scene, Michael has worked with a wide variety of groups in the region—including Jim Steele’s various ensembles, Jamie Wise’s Wise Choice, the Jamie Simon Trio and the Mark Maxwell Sax Experience—primarily as an acoustic jazz bassist. He also has worked regularly in rock and pop groups such as Fawn Liebowitz and Glory Daze, as well as a guitarist in several blues projects—and as a guitarist at his church, alongside stellar bassist Steve Lupkin of the Blues Lupkin Blues Band. Michael, who was introduced to reggae music by his father, the late Francis L. Patterson, is no stranger to the music, having spent time playing with Kiwi and Akinlana in RahJah. He also has worked with an number of African-influenced groups such as JATA and Tamafole under the leadership of renowned Guinean drummer Abass Camara and has worked on recording projects with Mandingo, as well a with live music projects with Jon. With Jon holding it down steady on bass, Michael gets to help hold it down on guitar next to Kiwi and shares vocal duties out front from time to time in Yehuda XCIX.

Aurora Rivera,

First generation in the states, born and raised in Chicago of Puerto Rican decent, Aurora Rivera has been exposed to a variety of musical genres and always loved to sing them all, especially the music from her cultural roots. She has sung professionally with Yorumba, Agave, Experimental Music Workshop and Timbalaye. Aurora has also experimented with recording demo projects and is a master of sound. She initially came to Yehuda XCIX as a guest vocalist, singing one of the early ska hits that helped put Jamaican music on the map, members of the group quickly recruited her to add her vocal and percussion skills to the band. They also are quick to come to her about production and sound skills. Aurora is seen as the utility member of the group, willing to fill a number of jobs with Yehuda XCIX and helping to keep the work fun and on track.

Jim Steele,

Keyboardist Jim Steele is widely acknowledged as one of the most accomplished and versatile musicians in the region. A renowned jazz and third stream—a synthesis of classical music and jazz—performer and composer, he continues to be an innovator, performing not just standard jazz fair but also from a book of more than 500 of his own compositions. His compositions have been played by a number of other musicians and group’s including Indiana’s premier big band—the Fort Wayne-based New Millennium Jazz Orchestra. He has released a number of acclaimed recordings, including “Who’s There?” with the Jim Steele Quartet and the fusion-based “Neptune Rising.” Jim has performed throughout northern Indiana and beyond, including engagements in Chicago, Detroit, Minneapolis, Washington D.C., and at the legendary Blue Note jazz club in New York. He has worked with artists as diverse as Richie Cole, Ernie Watts, and Steve Hobbs—as well as with Yehuda XCIX members Mandingo Guadalupe on the Experimental Music Workshop recording and on numerous gigs and various recordings with Yehuda XCIX guitarist and vocalist Michael Patterson. In addition to leading his own groups, Jim continues to be a widely sought sideman given his tremendous playing and arranging skills and his ability to quickly master seemingly any genre of music, from bebop and blues to R&B and rock. Jim brings a universe of experience to this celebration of reggae music by Yehuda XCIX as the group’s keyboardist.

Akinlana Dada,

Akin is a spiritual center for all things reggae, utilizing his vocal and percussion skills to add multiple layers to the music. Akinlana—or Akin, as group members call him—has devoted the entirety of his musical life to studying and mastering the music of Africa and the African Diaspora, particularly on hand drums. He is a founding member of the Three Rivers Jenbé Ensemble, which focuses on playing the music of the Malinke people of West Africa, with a special focus on the djembe (jenbé) and dunnun drums. He is also an accomplished conga player and adept at the nyabinghi drum, which is central to the Rastari tradition so closely associated with reggae music. In addition to having spent time serving as a drum instructor and administrator for the Three Rivers Jenbé Ensemble that later gave birth to the parent TRIAAC, Akinlana played in the organization’s adult adjunct JATA playing traditional music of the Malinke people. He has also worked with a number of reggae bands through the years, including RahJah with Yehuda XCIX brother Kiwi, the Ohio-based Ras Riddem and served as leader of the Dada Reggae band. Akinlana also has shown his love for all music and worked with the largely folk and Celtic-influenced River Project. In Yehuda XCIX, he serves as one of the group’s primary lead singers and percussionist.

Kent “Kiwi” Fingerle,

Hoosier born multi-instrumentalist, Kent “Kiwi” Fingerle has had a lifelong love affair with music of all types, but especially reggae music. Kiwi has served as guitarist and vocalist for a number of reggae groups including the “Mountain Reggae Band” based in Colorado Springs, Colo., as well as a leader with the Indiana-based group RahJah. In addition to being a player, Kiwi is continues to make his mark on the music world as a writer, having written, recorded and performed reggae music with Harry “Harry Mo” Moises from St. Croix, Virgin Islands, and as writer of his own moving compositions—including “It’s Our Culture,” which promises to become a staple of Yehuda XCIX. Kiwi also serves as one of the group’s lead singers, as well as switching between rhythm and lead guitar—and occasionally sitting in on keyboards during rehearsals when necessary. He also has worked extensively as a solo artist, working not only with a guitar but occasionally a banjo, performing “roots” music of various styles. Recently he has done stints as a featured artist at the Three Rivers Institute of Afrikan Arts and Culture (TRIAAC), performing during the organization’s highly regarded Acoustic Coffeehouse series.

Jon Walker

Like most people, Yehuda XCIX bassist Jon Walker wears a number of hats in life. Although usually preoccupied with his day job, Jon said he has had the privilege of learning volumes from the other members of the band, and says playing bass for Yehuda XCIX is the musical equivalent of summiting K2 and Everest. He has also had the honor of working with other Fort Wayne greats like nationally renowned blues harpist Bill Lupkin, Tom Castonzo, Doug Laughlin and the late Joe Laguna. When he is not expanding his mind learning about Rasta philosophy and culture he works his regular gig with Eric Purdy and Mike Berger in the band Laguna’s Pride.

But, what really sets him apart as an example for others to follow is his truly giving nature and his understanding that music can be a healing work. In addition to being a humble but truly accomplished bassist, Jon is a renowned ophthalmologist, professor and member of Physicians for a National Health Program. His work in the medical field includes numerous philanthropic endeavors, including and helping through various missions to provide equipment and other support to clinics here and in other parts of the world, including Central and South America. Jon’s giving nature and role as a healer is reflected in his music in that he has organized a number of musical events to raise awareness of and funds for groups that are helping to make the world a better place in a number of ways. Members of Yehuda XCIX see Jon as the heart of the band—the one who put together the idea to utilize the message of unity, love and justice that is so central to so much of reggae music. What an appropriate role for a reggae bassist.

Bill Mallonee: #65 in Paste Magazine’s “100 Greatest Living Songwriter’s” Poll

“The poetry and intelligence of Bill Mallonee’s songs rivals Dylan’s, and the spirituality and inspiration of them is like the timeless hymns. He’s one of my favorite all time artist.”

“…the best folk-rock act nobody’s ever hear of… The intelligence and intensity of Mallonee’s writing has elicited comparisons to Dylan from his loyal underground admirers. Given the consistency and quality of Mallonee’s work over eight albums, he is arguably the first writer since John Prine to make the comparison plausible.” - New York Press
